The court heard he had been refused entry because he was drunk, but returned an hour later.

When he was escorted away from the club, Hartley punched the woman on the left side of her face. He was detained by the woman’s colleagues until police arrived.

Ruth Snoddin, prosecuting, said: “She was left with a lump above her left eye. Her earring was caught and bleeding was caused.”

The court heard Hartley had been invited out for a free night after working for the night club.

Melanie Hoffman, mitigating, said: “ He is very remorseful. He knows that the way he behaved was totally inappropriate. He can’t explain why he behaved that way.”

The court heard that Hartley had lost his job as a result of the assault, but he had since found a new one. He had no previous convictions.

He was fined £450 and ordered to pay £150 compensation and £85 costs.
