The Easy Granite Company Ltd failed to comply with an abatement notice to clean up its operations on the Burma Road Industrial Estate in Blidworth after complaints from neighbouring firms.

Potentially dangerous airborne dust particles had travelled into one neighbouring work unit and dust-contaminated water had seeped through a partition wall into another unit which produces food.

Newark & Sherwood District Council’s environmental health officers had ordered Easy Granite to make sure stone was only cut within an enclosed unit, install dust extraction equipment and provide a safe means of disposing cooling water.

Despite assurances from the owners that the problems would be addressed the complainants continued to gather evidence of the on-going problems. The firm was eventually served notice for contravening health and safety and failing to comply with five improvement notices.

At Mansfield magistrates on Thursday it was fined £21,000 and the council was also awarded costs in full of £2,189.87.
