Flaws examined through artwork

Sixth formers studying a BTEC Extended Diploma in Art at Ormiston Ilkeston Enterprise Academy (OIEA) were asked to submit their creations based on the theme flaws, perfection, ideals and compromises as part of their end of term coursework.

Year 12 student Georgia Henshall, 17, made a dress which was covered in more than 100 paper flowers.

She said: “I used the theme to focus on people who don’t like the way they look and want to hide their identities, so along with the dress I also made masks with the idea that they would be worn to a masquerade ball.”

Student Amy Watkinson, 17, created a large collage focusing on mental health issues and took inspiration from her own experience of anxiety and depression.

She said: “This piece is really about my own problems so it’s very personal to me and quite ambitious. I feel happy that I got it done and I used lots of different techniques.”

Sarah Griffiths, Art teacher at OIEA, said: “The students interpreted the theme they were given in lots of different ways. Some of them used film and animation while others painted and drew or sculpted.

“They all followed their own path and worked independently.

“We have been so impressed by the standard - their ideas were so creative. We are really looking forward to the exhibition they will put on at the end of the summer term.”
