The animal, called Angus, was doused in inflammable liquid and set on fire while his owner, six-year-old Logan Appleby, was on holiday with his family.

The family had only adopted Angus a few weeks ago after he was rescued from neglect.

The incident happened in a field off Alexander Terrace sometime between the evening of Monday, August 17 and the morning of Wednesday, August 19.

He suffered serious burns to his nose, face and front legs in the attack.

Logan’s mum Kayleigh Appleby visited Angus this morning and he sadly died shortly afterwards.

She said: “I want to thank everyone who has given us moral support and offered money to help with Angus’s vet bills. We didn’t accept the money but really appreciate how much people have taken Angus to their hearts.”
