Ben Hastings received the devastating news that he has tumours in his spine, liver, lung, chest and brain after two months of pain last month.

Friends immediately set themselves the target of raising £5,000 to create a financial safety net for his family while he is in hospital, and to help with his recovery.

Within a week, the site had received more than £2,000 in pledges.

Ben, aged 30, said: “It is overwhelming in all honesty.

“It is nice to see. It is that old saying – you know who your friends are. It picks up your spirits.

People I have worked with have sent lovely messages and offered their support. They have gone out of their way.”

Ben lives on Tannin Crescent, with fiancée Mary, son Bradley, nine, and daughter Isabelle, 18 months.

He said he has worked all his life, including jobs as a printer and as a salesman.

At the moment he uses crutches, and a wheelchair when he leaves the house..

Friend Martin Gaunt said: “He survived melanoma skin cancer three years ago and was only given the all clear in November.

“He has a great team of five specialists due to the several different areas affected – all working extra hard to help the family.”

Martin and his partner Lauren Cooke set up a justgiving page where people can help.
