Fundraiser Ruth walks tall for Alzheimers UK

More than 60 people pulled on their walking boots to take part in this year’s Big Walk in Nottinghamshire on Sunday 11th August in support of Alzheimer’s Research UK..

It was the second to be organised by Mansfield fundraiser Ruth Hobbs, who was inspired to raise cash for the charity after her mother, Dinah, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2011.

People of all ages took part in this year’s walk and Ruth hopes their efforts will help raise £3,000 for the dementia research experts.

Ruth said: “This year’s Big Walk was fantastic and those who attended really enjoyed it.

“It was lovely seeing so many smiling faces. There were a few black clouds but the weather was kind and everyone got back safely.

I’d like to thank all those people who turned out for the Big Walk. It has now been over two years since mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Unfortunately she continues to deteriorate as time goes by from this awful disease. When Mum was first diagnosed we were shocked to learn how little money there is for research into Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

“That’s why I’m determined to do everything I can to help the scientists who are working to find new treatments.”

For the second year, the walk followed the route of the Lady Chatterley Trail, starting and finishing at Teversal, thought to be the setting of DH Lawrence’s famous novel.

Miranda Johnson from the charity said: “The Big Walk in Nottinghamshire is a fantastic event and the charity is delighted Ruth decided to organise it for a second year.

“Everyone who took part should feel proud of their efforts, and we can’t thank Ruth enough for all her hard work.”
