Further falls in the number of jobseekers across the region

The number of unemployed people in the region is continuing to fall, according to the latest figures.

There were 23,910 fewer people unemployed in the East Midlands in November this year than there were 12 months ago.

The number of people claiming Jobseekers Allowance in the region was down from 103,244 to 79,334.

In Nottinghamshire, there were 12,501 people claiming Jobseekers Allowance in November, 3,630 fewer than the previous year.

In Derbyshire there were 4,262 fewer claimants, year on year, at 10,435.

Nationally the number of claimants was down to 990,742 compared with 1,260,186 in November 2012.

The national unemployment rate is now 7.4 per cent, its lowest since 2009.

George Cowcher, Chief Executive of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “It is encouraging that once again we have seen big falls in the number of JSA claimants across the region, although there could be some seasonality in these latest figures.

The January and February figures will be better indicators of the economy.”
