The five are accused of trespassing onto a property with an intent to inflict grievous bodily harm with the weapon.

Three of the group appeared at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday afternoon to answer to the charge.

It relates to an alleged incident that took place on Newark Way, Mansfield, on September 18.

Liam Esmond Smith, 23, of Newark Close, appeared alongside Adam Taylor, 20, of West Hill Drive at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court.

A third defendant, a 17-year-old youth also
appeared but is not allowed to be named for legal reasons.

With a number of friends and family of the defendants attending in the public gallery, no details of the case were outlined during the short hearing.

The magistrates decided that their powers were insufficient to deal with the matter, and therefore moved the case straight up to crown court. No pleas were entered.

They are due to appear at Nottingham Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on December 2.

As part of their bail conditions, the defendants are not allowed to go onto the Bellamy Road estate.

However, because Liam Esmond Smith lives on the estate, his bail conditions stipulate that he is simply not allowed to enter Newark Way.

Meanwhile, two other defendants involved with the case are also due before the courts.
