‘Giant’ thanks for volunteer family

A family has been honoured with an award for its services to the Mansfield Giants basketball team.

Jo and Jack Halstead started helping out when their children Nathan, Becky and Jack joined the club as players and now do everything from washing kits and organising refreshments to attending coaching courses.

They have become team managers for numerous junior teams at both local and national league level and have taken on the general administration of all junior sessions.

The Mansfield family was overjoyed to receive the Volunteer Family of the Year award at the England Basketball Volunteer Awards luncheon at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham.

Eleven Volunteer Awards were handed out at the event to honour those volunteering on a local, regional and national scale throughout England.

Jo Richards, Giants volunteer co-ordinator, said: “The Halsteads are an absolute lifeline for the club. Not a session goes by where the Family aren’t helping out in one way or another.

“But what makes them so different is that they do not see what they are doing as helping.

”They are constantly going out of their way to give the extra mile, not for thanks or personal gain, but because they enjoy doing it.”
