Golfers pledge support for Portland College sports academy campaign

Portland College are hoping that their £2m fundraising campaign swings even nearer to their ambitious total following a pledge of support from a group of golfers.

Hilltoppers Golf Society, who are based at Radcliffe-on-Trent Golf Club, are backing the college campaign for a new Inclusive Sports Academy.

The facility will dramatically improve disabled sports facilities on offer at the Nottingham Road college and give a big boost to sports groups and elite competitors across Mansfield and Ashfield.

The Hilltoppers have vast experience of raising cash for worthy causes and have already raised £50,000 between 2001 and 2009 for the Friends of the Children of Chernobyl charity as part of a partnership with Hucknall Rotary Club.

In 2011 the caring golfers also raised £12,000 to purchase a state of the art Prismaflex Machine for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

John Hill, from the Hilltoppers, said, “We are delighted to be able to support Portland College with their fundraising.

“We will be doing various events throughout the year, including the Hilltoppers Night at the Proms in July and then a golf day at the Radcliffe-on-Trent Golf Club in September.

“Hopefully we can help raise lots of money towards the new Academy and enable more disabled people to get access to great sporting facilities.”

Tracey Horton, Fundraising Executive at the College, spoke of her delight at the link up and said: “It is a great opportunity for the College being partners with the gentlemen from the Hilltoppers.

“They have done some superb charity work over the years and we are naturally delighted to have their support as we work towards our ambitious targets.”
