Green gets a makeover

Pre-school children helped officially open the newly improved green last week as they joined Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe Councillor Susan Bagshaw to plant flower bulbs on the site.

The children, from Watnall Preschool took part in the bulb planting to add the finishing touches to the area.

Funding for the improvements came from WREN and Broxtowe Borough Council.

The makeover saw wildflower areas, seating, access points and paths improved, a cornfield annual meadow created and a bird feeding crop established, were made after consultation with local residents last summer to help identify the improvements they wanted to see at the site.

Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economic Development, Councillor Richard Jackson said: “I’d like to say a big thank you to the children from Watnall Preschool who braved the November weather last week to be part of this special occasion.

“The council is committed to providing high quality parks and open spaces for Broxtowe residents to enjoy and is delighted that the funding has been used to make much needed improvements at this site.”

WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, conservation and heritage projects from funds donated by waste and resource management company FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund.

Cheryl Raynor, WREN’s Grant Manager for Nottinghamshire, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Borough Council and pleased that our funding has benefitted the local community in Watnall.

“WREN is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that make a difference to local communities and we’re really pleased with the way this project has progressed.

“Seeing the children enjoying themselves today on site planning bulbs is the icing on the cake.”
