Headstocks group appeals for backing

Clipstone Colliery Regeneration Group has put forward a plan to see the site transformed into a mixed use commercial, entertainment and residential area.

Among the plans by Clipstone Colliery Regeneration Trust - a not-for-profit community group - is a mile-long zip wire, a climbing centre, a start-up business area and self-build housing.

Rod Brown, spokesman for the regeneration group, said vital funding could be applied for from the Heritage Lottery Fund but a letter was needed from landowner Welbeck Estates confirming its willingness to sell the land.

The project would require funding in excess of £15m but has already been backed by Nottinghamshire Heritage and the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.

Jason Mordan, an historic building expert at Nottinghamshire County Council, said the proposals had potential to breathe new life into Clipstone.

He added: “What we are talking about is a not-for-profit scheme, so any money made would be ploughed into the area. It would do what regeneration is supposed to do and give the town an identity.”
