Health and wellbeing event lined up for homeless people

A SPECIAL health and wellbeing event is being held today (Friday) for homeless people in Hucknall and the rest of Ashfield.

It is estimated that there are 157 homeless people in, or with connections to, the Ashfield district. They are either without a place to live, reside in supported accommodation or get help from Notts County Council’s tenancy support service because of drugs or alcohol dependency or mental-health problems.

About 50 of them are expected to attend the event, which is being staged at the Festival Hall Leisure Centre in Kirkby.

It is aimed at helping them become more healthy and features sessions on cookery and oral health.

There will also be advice on sexual health and on stopping smoking.

There will also be information and advice stands from a wide variety of health organisations, including drug and alcohol services, local councils and the voluntary sector.

Coun Mick Murphy (Con), of Hucknall, who is the council’s Cabinet member for community safety, said: “We know that this group of people can feel isolated, cut off from services and lacking in confidence.

“Or they may not have the information they need to make informed choices about their personal health and wellbeing.

“We hope this event will give these people the information and advice that they need to help them improve their health and wellbeing in the future.”
