A SHOWCASE to unveil the history of St Mary’s Church in Bulwell had a nice ring to it — as visitors were able to take a trip up the bell tower.
The event was part of the Southwell and Nottingham Diocese’s ‘Open Churches’ weekend. More than 100 guests flocked to the church on Highbury Road and also enjoyed a picnic in the grounds.
Live entertainment was provided by the Bestwood Black Diamonds brass band, who performed two mini-concerts.
The tower tours included visits to the bell-ringers’ chamber and also the area where the bells are housed.
Displays were put up inside by various church groups. The event also featured tombolas, raffles and children‘s games.
Jillian Naylor, who is a church member and one of the event organisers, had virtually lost her voice when she spoke to the Dispatch because she had spent all day giving talks on the church!
But she said: “I think it was highly successful. We had people come and have a look in the church who hadn’t been for years.
“Feedback was excellent.”
