Home scoops top award for citizenship

Corner House care home, in St Margaret Street, has been presented with the Citizenship Award at the National Learning Disability Awards.

The award recognises people who have promoted inclusion and integration through their work in the community.

The home was recognised for the innovative ways the staff had brought the community and residents together, including by staging shared activities such as drop-in art sessions, sports events, and fire safety training.

Staff and residents also worked with police trainees so that they learn how to understand and interact with people who have learning disabilities, a spokesman for the home said.

Chris Munday, managing director of Sanctuary Supported Living, which runs the home, said: “This is a fantastic achievement by the team and residents of Corner House and we are all delighted at the win.

“The residents and staff are always enthusiastic about getting involved with the local community and this win is an excellent reward for all their efforts.”

Corner House provides residential care for 12 adults with learning disabilities, as well as a floating support service for people in the community.
