Hucknall armed siege is talk of the town

Police in riot gear moved in to cordon off parts of High Street following reports that a man was acting suspiciously.

Residents, office workers and shop staff were advised to stay indoors as officers dealt with the situation.

Sheila Robinson, of the Hucknall Tourism and Regeneration Group, told the Dispatch that she had been going into Byron Bingo just as the incident started.

She said: “I popped into Byron Bingo for about five or 10 minutes but could not then come out.

“We were told to stay indoors and so we were in there for about five hours before people could leave, under escort.

“My car was just outside but I was taken to my car.”

And she added: “It was exciting to see at the start but it did get a bit boring being in there for five hours.”

Police were called to High Street and cordoned off a section between Watnall Road and Station Road.

Rumours in the town circulated, with some thinking that an armed robbery was taking place at a bank.

The incident ended almost 12 hours after it began.

At 1.40am today, armed officers entered the Spot On snooker hall in Vine Terrace where a man, believed to be armed, had been.

A 20-year-old suspect was arrested and detained on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear or violence.

He was taken into police custody for questioning.
