Hucknall community news: Hucknall (Leenside) Women’s Institute hold latest meeting

The Annual General Meeting of Hucknall (Leenside) Women’s Institute was held recently at the Central Methodist Church, Hucknall, when Ellie Briggs and Helen Rose of the Notts WI Support Team were present.

President Alison Inglis gave final details of the Baton Relay, which is travelling around all Women’s Institutes in England and Wales to celebrate 100 years since the organisation was formed.

It will be passed to Hucknall from Eastwood & Brinsley WI at the Bee Garden in Tichfield Park on Sunday 15th June.

It will then be passed to Bestwood WI at the Winding Engine House.

Alison also gave the good news of a grant being received from Ashfield District Council to allow two members to take part in Educational Courses at the WI College in Oxfordshire.

A draw was made for the two places which were won be Vera Preston and Judy Gow.

Secretary Carol Curtis announced several new County WI activities including gliding, archery, patchwork and “A Night at the Dogs” as well as the annual County Quiz.

The Resolution chosen to be discussed at the National Federation of Women’s Institue’s AGM in Leeds next month related to Organ Donation.

During the meeting the group called on all members to make their wishes known regarding organ donation.

The local annual meeting business followed with annual reports from secretary and treasurer Helen Smith followed by the President’s address.

The Darts organiser, Yvonne Haslam, reported on a successful year having won their league.

Trophies were presented to Meryl Briggs and Judy Gow who were the highest and lowest scorers over the season. Judy Gow also received a retirement gift after 17 years on the committee.

The committee for the coming year will be Josie Bailey, Heather Beardall, Carol Curtis, Jenny Holmes, Alison Inglis, Sylvia Kitchen, Lynne Mitchell, Vera Preston, Helen Smith, Molly Smith, Angela Underwood and Margaret White.

The next meeting will be on the 17th June and will be a 3 corners Craft Evening and new members and guests are very welcome.
