More families in Bulwell and district are living in fuel poverty than most other areas in the UK, according to new figures.
And it is “shocking” that this has been made worse by energy companies overcharging people, says the town’s Labour MP, Graham Allen.
The figures show that 5,383 families in Mr Allen’s Nottingham North constituency cannot afford to adequately heat their homes. But a report by the independent Competition and Markets Authority reveals that households in the area have been overcharged by the ‘big six’ energy companies to the tune of £1.5 million.
“This means they are paying 5% more than they should because they are not on the cheapest tariff,” says Mr Allen.
“The government’s failure to take action on energy rip-offs adds more burdens to hard-pressed families in Bulwell.”
