Paul Naylor, of Mulberry Gardens, also said he would “punch her lights out” and “swore on his kid’s life” that he would carry out his threats.

The arguments got so bad that Mrs Naylor eventually called the police, Bernadette McGurk, prosecuting, told Nottingham Magistrates’ Court.

And when officers arrived, Mrs Naylor told them how her husband had also been violent and aggressive towards her the previous day.

“It resulted in her locking him out of the house,” said Mrs McGurk. “But he got a hammer and threatened to smash up the washing-machine.

“He also banged the hammer on the door and after getting back into the house, he threw an incense burner at her, bruising her left thigh. He then pushed her in the chest, causing a lot of pain.”

In court, Naylor pleaded guilty to two charges of assault against Lindsay Naylor on Wednesday 25th June and Thursday 26th June.

The court heard that the arguments, which were about money being borrowed for the washing-machine, put such a strain on their relationship that Naylor moved out to live with his son in Beeston.

However, Chris Saunders (defending) pointed out that, previously, “everything had been fantastic” between the couple.

“It is amazing how such a petty matter can be blown out of all proportion,” said Mr Saunders.

“It is also rare in such a case that the remorse of the defendant comes with such power.”

Since the assaults, Naylor had sought counselling through his GP, said Mr Saunders.

And in handing out a 12-month community order with supervision, the chairman of the Bench insisted that the progress of the counselling was monitored.

Naylor was also fined £20 and ordered to pay £85 court costs, plus a victim surcharge of £60.
