Improved practice reduces death rate

Data gathered by Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust shows since April a range of measures to decrease mortality rates have started to take effect after a peak in mortality levels between January and March.

The average Hospital Standardised Mortality Rate (HSMR) stands at 100.

But the figure has dropped for Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust from 131 in the fourth quarter of 2012-13 to 104 in the second quarter of 2013-14 - well within the national average range across the country.

Dr Nabeel Ali, executive medical director at the Trust, said: “Our staff have undertaken a huge amount of work to improve patient mortality outcomes.

“Early recognition of deteriorating patients coming through our emergency service, with referral to the most appropriate specialist team, is making a valuable contribution in ensuring patients quickly get the most appropriate care for their clinical needs.

“Review of the patient pathways through our hospitals has enabled us to improve the care provided for our patients, and coupled with the appointment of new staff, this is now showing real benefits for patients.

“I would point particularly to the excellent work that has been done to improve care of patients with sepsis.”

A trust spokesman said the appointment of new staff, a review of patient pathways, changes to junior doctor rotas and improved care in speciality areas had all played a part.
