Kirkby girl guides’ international plan

Three girl guides held a coffee evening to help fund trips across the world.

The three girls are all Young Leaders attached with the 1st Kirkby Guide Unit and are raising funds in order to pay their way on international trips over the summer.

Chloe Saxton (15) has been selected to travel to San Francisco in July with Girlguiding’s Midlands Region, whilst Abi Winsor (15) and Charlotte Thompson (15) have been chosen to join an expedition to Iceland in August with other members of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire.

The Kirkby Guides’ Coffee & Cake evening had a distinctive Easter theme and included a tombola and quiz as well as a cake stall and refreshments. The three girls are aiming to raise £2,200 each through fund-raising initiatives like running stalls at car boot sales, packing bags at local supermarkets and applying to local charitable organisations.

Chloe, Abi and Charlotte are in Year 11 at Ashfield Academy so are also busy preparing for their GCSEs. The three are all holders of the Baden-Powell Award - the highest achievement possible for Guides – and are looking forward to the prospect of international travel.

Claire Sharman, leader with 1st Kirkby in Ashfield Guides, said: “These girls have been chosen because of their hard work. It will broaden their horizons and will hopefully inspire others to aim to do the same. Opportunities to take part in trips like these don’t come along very often for our girls and I’m really proud of the hard work that Chloe, Abi and Charlotte are putting in to raise the funds to cover their own costs.”

She added that any help from the local community would also be very much appreciated.
