A party spokesman said they are “confident” of taking the directly-elected executive role – which was instituted following a referendum in 2002.

Current Mayor Tony Eggington, who has held the position for the last 12 years as a member of the Mansfield Independent Forum, narrowly beat Labour at the last election in 2011.

Commenting on his selection, Mr Lee, who currently serves as the leader of the Labour group on Mansfield District Council and works as a solicitor, said: “I’m delighted that local people have backed me to be their voice standing up for public services in Mansfield.

“I will fight a tough campaign and, if elected, will use my role to fight for a better deal for Mansfield that puts local people first.”

Mansfield MP Sir Alan Meale welcomed Mr Lee’s selection.

He said: “Martin has a proven track record in standing up for local people.

“He has vast experience and the qualities necessary to deliver in such an important post.

“I look forward to working with him to improve our area.”
