LETTER: Young children must be safe from harm

As a dad-of-two, I was disappointed to read Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary report which criticised Nottinghamshire police over inadequate performance on child protection.

Children are some of the most vulnerable members of our society and it should always be the priority of the police to diligently keep them away from risk.

The delays and poor supervision highlighted by the HMIC report which led to local children being placed at hazard are totally unacceptable with urgent action required.

I had a 36-year career as a serving police officer which included several as a force schools and youth officer where I had daily interaction with children from all backgrounds. If I am given the honour of becoming Nottinghamshire’s next police and crime commissioner I will use this valuable experience to reform and improve child protection. We have a lot of things to be proud of in our county, but we can never be the best unless younger residents are safe from harm.
