Linby has won best kept village award. l-r is Claire Hardstaff, Bob Brothwell and Denise Ireland. The twins are 9mnth old William and Alice who are the 10th generation of a Linby family.

The historical village not only scooped the winning shield for the smallest village category in the Best Kept Village competition but took the top title overall beating 35 villages to be named number one.

“This is fantastic news for the village and we were all totally gobsmacked when they called out Linby for the Best in Notts,” said Linby Parish Council’s Bob Brothwell.

“It reflects the hard work by everybody in the village for taking pride and respecting where they live.”

As well as walking away with a certificate and £125 prize money for winning their category, as grand winner, Linby also banked £1,000.

“The success is down to the people of Linby and Coun Winn Lewis who co-ordinates the programme,” added Coun Brothwell. “The prize money will now go a long way towards the planting scheme for next year.”

The contest is organised by the Nottinghamshire Campaign to Protect Rural England and winning the award couldn’t come at a better time for the village as campaigners continue their fight against developments in the area.

Coun Brothwell added: “It proves our point that ancient rural villages must be protected and the quality of life for residents and visitors is worth fighting for.”
