M1 shut after woman fell from bridge

The M1 motorway was closed for nearly two hours last night after a woman fell from a bridge over the road.

Police received a call at around 6.50pm on Tuesday to say that someone had fallen from a bridge in the Annesley area, between junction 27 and 28.

A 29-year-old woman was found on the hard shoulder and had sustained non life-threatening injuries.

The northbound carriageway was closed between junction 26 and 28 for over two hours.

Trapped traffic had to be turned round and escorted back up the carriageway by Highways Agency staff.

The southbound carriageway was also closed for a time so the air ambulance could land.

The injured woman was taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre for treatment.
