Male voice choir to sing with Royal Marines.

Mansfield and District Male Voice Choir have been offered one of the highest honours extended to any group of singers - the opportunity to perform with the Royal Marines.

They will be joining ten other choirs and the Band of The Royal Marines at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham on 16th November.

Choirs from across the country are chosen for the event according to their success over the last year and all proceeds go to the Royal British Legion in Nottinghamshire.

Male voice choirs from as far apart as Sheffield, Grimsby and Northampton will be taking part in the 350-strong performance named Sounds Sensational.

Geoff Mansfield, chairman of Mansfield and District Male voice Choir (MDMVC), said: “We are delighted - everybody is buzzing. This is major for us because you just do not get to play with the Royal Marines.”

Audiences on the night can expect to hear classics such as There Is Nothing Like A Dame from South Pacific, Bring Him Home from Les Miserables and Matt Monroe’s Walk On.

Mansfield and District Male Voice Choir was formed of Mansfield Male Voice Choir, which started in 1926, and another group from Rainworth,

At one time during the 1950s and 1960s the group was known as one of the most successful in the country and this is a reputation Geoff would like to win back.

“We have a musical director who has been in on the music scene for 40 years and she drives us really hard,” said Geoff.

“We are also appealing for ten more members and hope this will contribute to greater success.”

But this is not to say the choir has not seen its fair share of glamour over the last couple of years - MDMVC performed at the Royal Albert Hall and Manchester’s MEN Arena last year with 1000 Welsh male voices.

The group will also be performing in a major concert with three other choirs in aid of John Eastwood Concert at Southwell Minster on 3rd March next year then at a Newstead Abbey concert in support of the Byron Society on 6th July.

If you are interested in joining the MDMVC they meet every Tuesday at the Salvation Army Citadel on Mansfield’s Victoria Street.
