Man jailed after punch in Mansfield town centre led to brain damage

A single punch thrown during a night out in Mansfield town centre has left one young man facing medical treatment for the rest of his life and another in jail.

Ashley Haslam, of Edgmanton Road in Meden Vale, was out with friends when he punched a 23-year-old reveller in Leeming Street in the early hours of 15 March 2014.

He was identified through CCTV and arrested later that day.

His victim suffered severe head injuries. He was in an induced coma in hospital before undergoing brain surgery, followed by intensive rehabilitation and speech therapy. He still has further reconstructive surgery scheduled.

Twenty-two-year-old Haslam pleaded guilty at a hearing in May to causing grievous bodily harm. At Nottingham Crown Court today (Wednesday 18th June 2014) he was sentenced to 16 months in prison.

Three other men, who were also arrested in connection with the incident, were released without further action.

Detective Inspector Phil Sims said: “This was a typical example of boys out on the town, drinking a bit too much and letting things go too far.

“The victim and his family will never be the same again. His life is no longer as he knew it and is unlikely to ever be the same again.

“In one moment one punch was thrown and two lives changed forever. I urge you to learn from this incident. Drink responsibly and think before you act. Is it really worth it? The victim in this case is lucky to be alive. Had he died, Haslam could have been beginning a life sentence today.”
