Gary Giles, 49, of no fixed address, was sentenced yesterday (Thursday, June 30), after pleading guilty at Mansfield Magistrates Court.

Giles will serve a 25 day community order under supervision and was ordered to pay £100 compensation and a £85 victim surcharge.

Police were called to Mill Street in Mansfield on June 28, to reports of a man damaging a parked car.

Gary Giles was found to be shouting racial slurs as he caused the damage, which was reported by members of the public.

Officers dealt swiftly and effectively using policies and risk assessments released earlier this year.

A police spokesperson said: “This should act as a reminder of how seriously the force takes reports of any crime which is motivated by hate and how effective we are in bringing perpetrators to justice.

“Hate crime in this county will not be tolerated. Our specially trained officers will actively seek to prosecute in every instance where a hate crime is reported to us.”
