Mansfield and Ashfield: Where to find your local Remembrance Day services

Deputy Lord Lieutenant Colonel Roger Merryweather will be among the dignitaries paying tribute to fallen service men and women at the Mansfield Civic Centre War Memorial this Remembrance Sunday.

Mansfield MP Sir Alan Meale, mayor Tony Egginton, veterans and current members of the 4 Mercian Territorial Army, based on Bath Street, will also pay their respects.

After a 9.30am assembly, a brief ceremony, including wreath laying, will take place at 10am before a march to St Peter and St Paul’s Church on Churchside.

A 10.55am service will be followed by a parade back to the civic centre for refreshments.

Honorary poppy organiser for the Mansfield branch of the Royal British Legion, Joe Martin, is hoping for another strong turn-out from the public.

“Because of recent conflicts it’s quite rare for people to not know anyone who has been called up to serve, plus with remembrance and holocaust taught in schools, the message continues to be widely appreciated,” he said.

“It’s not about glorifying war, but thanking the service men and women that have preserved our freedom down the years and remained just as committed to doing now as ever.”

Poppy donations this year from the Mansfield area have already passed £10,000, with more to be received.

Mr Martin said: “We are always pleased that the people of the area give so generously. It is nice to know that people have respect for what our service men and women go through.
