Mansfield ‘Disco Diva’ is new champ

A Mansfield girl has been crowned a champion at this year’s international “Disco Kid” competition at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom

Amour Sumagaysay (9), from the Excelsior School of Dance in Mansfield Woodhouse, scooped both the U10 ‘Freestyle Disco’ and ‘Slow Dance Superstar’ titles after dancing her way through a series of one minute heats to eventually reach the seven dancer Final.

Each finalist then had to perform a 40 second solo routine in front of almost 40 judges and more than 2000 spectators before the overall winners of each age section were announced.

Amour managed to stave off competition from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Norway and England in both her sections to be awarded the overall titles.

Her teacher, Angela Stirland, said “We’re all just so proud of Amour at the studio. She has worked so hard all year for this – it means so much to any freestyle dancer to actually go and make a final at Disco Kid – a semi-final even. Never mind actually winning it. And Amour has gone and done it twice. We’re over the moon.”

Amour’s victories at Disco Kid have topped off a great year for the youngster, who became the youngest soloist to be selected for the Semi Finals of the hit TV Show, Got to Dance.

During the show, Amour was given the opportunity to dance in front of celebrity judges, Kimberly Wyatt, Ashley Banjo and Aston Merrigold Live in Sky One.

Most recently, Amour has been delighted to learn that she has been nominated for two Le Classique De Danse Awards: a prestigious Dinner and Awards Evening held every March at Southport’s Floral Hall. Amour is really excited to attend and has her fingers crossed that she can win something on the night.
