Mansfield Museum hosts First World War commemorative exhibition by Gariboldi students

Last year youngsters at the Forest Town school took part in a special day to commemorate the outbreak of the First World War and the role Clipstone Camp played in the conflict.

A spokesperson for the school said: “The students gained a unique understanding of what life was like during the conflict

“With 2014 marking the start of the centenary of the First World War and 2015 marking the centenary of the opening of the First World War training Camp at Clipstone, Garibaldi College was keen to ensure staff and students engaged in commemorations to mark these events, particularly as the school stands on the site of what was once Clipstone Camp.

“Taken together the exhibition goes some way towards encapsulating how the Garibaldi College community has responded to the events, experiences and legacy of the First World War.”

The exhibition ’Lest We Forget’ includes, ink Banner designs, work journal research books, clay relief commemorative plaques, lino prints mounted in reclaimed wooden surrounds. It runs until 30th May.

Last year the College hosted a First World War Day with guest speakers and local historians taking part in a day of activities focused on the events and experiences of the conflict.

Among the activities at the special day last July, pupils visited a recreated trench at Sherwood Pines where the camp was located, looked at the war records of men from the area and recreated a field hospital following a gas attack.

Over the last two years the college art department has worked closely with staff at Mansfield Museum in the development of a ‘Live Brief’ which forms part of the Level 2 BTEC qualification.
