Mansfield: Portland staff’s mud, sweat and cheers

A 35-strong Portland Warriors team boosted by friends and family have raised more than £1,600 online, with more to come in offline donations, after competing in the Total Warrior event.

The 10km course at Brabham Park near Leeds is strewn with punishing obstacles, testing mental and physical abilities.

Sheena Hardwick was the first Portland representative across the finishing line, but there was a strong emphasis on teamwork.

“There was a massive range of fitness levels, but the resilience and determination shown by everyone, was amazing,” said Ian Black, the college’s schools liaison executive.

“A lot of people had to train really hard to take part, but I don’t think anyone found it easy - it was tough.

“The staff are very passionate about the new project that and delighted they can do their bit to make it happen.”

The planned £2m Inclusive Sports Academy will be a state-of-the art facility second nationally only to Stoke Mandeville when it comes to disabled sports.

It is hoped the work will start in early 2017.
