Mansfield talking newspaper is seeking volunteers

The Mansfield and Ashfield Echo, which is distributed among hundreds of partially sighted people in the area is back after setting up at its new studio.

Now volunteers are being sought to work as readers, computer‘sound engineers’ and people to contribute items.

The service’s editor Bill Purdue explained: “Each edition of the Echo is compiled by a small team of volunteers who will meet every other Tuesday evening at the new studio to record the edition.

“This is duplicated the next morning and sent out to 175 blind and partially-sighted listeners.

“Sound engineers are vital to this process as they control the way the recording is conducted and produce the master copies.

“We are looking for a few readers on our stand by list. We take news from the Chad and local magazines but we also need to give specific information that theblind might find specifically useful, so our members sometimes compile articles themselves and we welcome contributions.

Bill continued: “As the Echo is recorded throughout the year, with a short break at Christmas and New Year, membership of the recording team does require a certain amount of commitment.”
