Mansfield Woodhouse mum wants to raise £6,000 for Macmillan nurses who supported her dying fiancé through his battle with cancer

Katie Turton and a group of friends are hoping to raise £6,000 for Macmillan nurses in memory of Andrew Lynn who died last August.

She has organised a fundraising event at Jangos Indoor Play Center on Saturday (February 27).

Katie, 38 said: “Andrew passed away in August last year from a rare form of cancer and we all took help and strength from these wonderful nurses.

“Andrew although not the fittest person in the world ran the London marathon for blind children and was hoping to do this again for children with Asperger -his youngest son has the condition.

“He started with a cough that wouldn’t go away which led to tests and the loss of a very loved man who had a big heart.

She told how Andrew was diagnosed with a tumour after he developed a cough.

“He had a PET scan and we found out it was cancer, a very unusual form.

“At first it was dormant, then it started to change and went into his left lung. They couldn’t operate because it was too near his heart valve.

Andrew had two lots of chemotherapy but we couldn’t believe how quickly it happened.

“The MacMillan nurses were brilliant - they put him in contact with people who could offer financial help and helped him to become strong as he faced up to what was happening.”

“Proceeds from the event will go to Macmillan Cancer Support who provide support to people living with cancer from diagnosis through treatment and beyond.

Jangos indoor play center in Forest Town are letting Katie use their facilities to hold a fundraising event.

Katie added: “We have Once upon a rainbow coming at a very discounted rate as Anna and Elsa from frozen, Sofia the first, Cinderella and Belle.

“Children can then have their photos taken with these characters by a professional photographer Fiona Ashbury who has generously given her time for free.

“Darth Vader and Jango Fett will also be there for any Star wars fans.”

“We will also have balloons and cakes for sales, hook a duck, face painting, raffle and will be selling hot dogs and nachos. The event will be from 6.30-8.30 and discounted entry for children.”

The fun day is one of a number of fundraising efforts taking place in 2016 culminating in a team of four family and friends completing a 295 mile ride to Paris in May.

Katie added: “Andrew had mentioned that he wanted to set up a direct debit for Macmillan nurses but his fight was over too soon

My eldest son Matthew wanted to do something about this and thought about doing the London marathon, but after asking Andrew’s brother Tony they eventually decided to do the bike ride.”

The team of four will set off from Crystal palace for their four day marathon on May 18.
