Mansfield swimming star Rebecca Adlington has breathed a sigh of relief after she thought burglars had broken into her home and taken her prized gold medals.

The 24-year-old double Olympic champion took to Twitter to express her anger after she thought thieves had taken off with her treasured medals following a break-in at her house in Greater Manchester.

She wrote ‘In absolute pieces’ after she thought her medals had been taken in the raid, adding it would be ‘something I will never be able to replace!’

But it turns out the medals had not been taken, although a laptop and an Audi, belonging to her husband-to-be, were.

Adlingtonfound fame in the Beijing Olympics where she won two gold medals, and at last year’s London 2012 Games she took home two bronze medals.

At the beginning of the year she announced her retirement from the sport to pursue a career in broadcasting.

She lives in a village near Stockport in the Greater Manchetser area with her fiance.
