Men jailed after stealing cars in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire

Three Sheffield men who broke into homes in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire and stole cars worth more than £240,000 have been jailed for a total of 12 years.

Martyn Sedgwick (31), Adam Platts (25), and Ross Turton (21), were all charged with conspiracy to commit burglary and conspiracy to steal.

The men broke into three homes in Nottinghamshire and nine homes in north Derbyshire stealing 11 cars worth an estimated £242,000.

The trio attacked homes in Lowdham, Bilsthorpe and Nottingham City Centre as well as Dronfield, Bradwell, Hope, and Chesterfield, in Derbyshire.

The break-ins all took place between May and August 2012.

The men were arrested after their cars were linked to the burglaries and high-tech mobile phone analysis put them in the areas at the time the offences were taking place.

Sedgwick, of Danewood Avenue, and Platts, of Newbould Crescent, Beighton, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary. The charge of conspiracy to steal was ordered to remain on file.

They were each jailed for 54 months at a sentencing hearing at Nottingham Crown Court yesterday (Thursday 27th June 2013).

Turton, of Danewood Avenue, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary but admitted conspiracy to steal. He was sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty.

Det Insp Julian Wilson, of Derbyshire police, said: “These men used sophisticated techniques and carried out targeted burglaries, many of which had a profound effect on the victim.

“We hope these sentences will act as a deterrent to would-be burglars that we are determined to catch those responsible and bring them to justice.

“We have seen a big reduction in the number of burglaries across Derbyshire as part of our ongoing work targeting this type of crime and we have a number of further prosecutions pending.”
