Merlin Flying Club pageant day

Don’t miss the chance to witness what could be the final Merlin Flying Club pageant at Hucknall’s Rolls-Royce airfield which will include a Hurricane and Spitfire flying over Hucknall.

Tomorrow,Saturday 7th June, the Rolls-Royce based club will be holding its annual event of classic wheels and wings.

The club, which is made up of Rolls-Royce employees past and present and family members, has been operating for over 50 years.

This is the 12th year the club has run this event, which features a flying display plus a static display of classic cars and motorcycles.

Hucknall itself has been in use as a base for flying since 1916 when it was home to No. 15 Training Depot of the Royal Flying Corps, the predecessor to today’s Royal Air Force.

This year’s flying display is scheduled to include a Supermarine Spitfire, a Hawker Hurricane, a Hawker Sea Fury and the Yakovlevs aerobatic display team.

There will also be amusements, trade stalls, food stalls and a licensed bar.

Gates open at 10am with the flying display taking place at 2pm, weather and aircraft serviceability permitting.

Admission is £5 for adults, accompanied under 14s are free, as is car parking. Entrance is via the Rolls-Royce main gate on Watnall Road in Hucknall.

“We look forward to welcoming automobile and aviation enthusiasts of all ages to this excellent and popular event,” said member Nigel Perkins. “This is likely to be the last year that this event takes place as preliminary planning permission has been granted to build on the airfield.”
