Kirkby Rotary Club recently welcomed Alice Kurylo, the reigning Miss Mansfield & Sherwood Forest, and competition director, Trish Mapletoft, here with Joint President John McEwen, to talk about how beauty contests have changed in recent times.
The visitors showed a DVD explaining how the emphasis has moved from a mere show of physical beauty to tasks that give the entrants confidence, such as public speaking, and highlight their achievements.
Trish explained that to give the contest more integrity, the bathing suit parade is no longer a part of the proceedings. The aim is to give the entrants as wide an experience as possible and to make them role models for other local young women.
Alice said that her year as Miss Mansfield was the most amazing of her life, highlighting a week’s visit to Mansfield, Ohio, competing in the Miss England contest, and raising nearly £5,000 for Nottingham City Hospital Donations Trust and other charities.
