Melanie Darrington said; “This road is notorious for speeding and its horrific junctions.

“Elderly residents have told me they are scared to go out as they can’t cross the road safely because cars are often travelling at such speed.

“I have also spoken to parents who worry about their little ones crossing the road as it leads to a local school.

“It is an accident waiting to happen which is why I’m urging the council and police to find a permanent solution before someone is seriously hurt.”

She said although the road is apparently treated as a priority by the police, they are hindered by fact that two speed measuring devices have to be shared throughout the whole area.

She said: “The other problem is several main roads, including Dalestorth Road and Forest Road feed into this one, while Pleasley Road now has the Co-Op which has added to the traffic. “

She added that Visibility is notoriously bad and the sheer volume of vehicles made it ‘a nightmare’.

The two main problems are speeding cars and no sensible places to cross.

The campaigners have set up a Facebook group Your Community News Skegby to keep residents informed of their progress.

Ashfield MP Gloria De Piero is backing the residents in their campaign for greater road safety measures on Mansfield Road.

Ms De Piero said: “Local folk know what the biggest problems are in their own area better than anyone else.

“This is clearly an issue that’s not going to away.

“ I’d hate to think that the next time I’m talking about this is because there’s been an accident, so I’ve added my name to the petition and I’m writing to both the police and the council to see what else can be done to make this road safer.”

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire County Council said that any petition should be presented to a full meeting of the County Council by the local member from where it will go on to receive full consideration by the transport and highways committee.
