CAMPAIGNING Bulwell MP Graham Allen has backed a call for the end to whales being needlessly harpooned during a visit to the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) research vessel ‘Song of the Whale’.
Mr Allen was given a tour of the state-of-the-art boat, which employs non-harmful methods, such as cameras, to study the creatures.
The visit was at St Katharine Docks in London before IFAW’s team of whale experts set sail to the 63rd annual International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting in Jersey to urge delegates to protect the ban on commercial whaling.
Mr Allen said: “It is unacceptable that whales — our mammal cousins — are still being cruelly harpooned for commercial reasons. There is no humane way to kill them.
“From the great volume of correspondence I receive, I’m well aware that my constituents care passionate about animal welfare. It is vital we protect them for future generations.”
