New plan for Clipstone Headstocks

The 200ft headstocks have been the source of much debate since the pit’s closure in 2003, with opinion divided on whether they should stay or go.

Among the plans by Clipstone Colliery Regeneration Trust - a not-for-profit community group - is a mile-long zip wire, a climbing centre, a start-up business area and self-build housing.

Jason Mordan, an historic building expert at Nottinghamshire County Council, said the proposals had potential to breathe new life into Clipstone.

“What we are talking about is a not-for-profit scheme,” said Jason.

“So any money made would be ploughed into the area. It would do what regeneration is supposed to do and give the town an identity, allowing it to return to a heritage it could be proud of.”

Mr Mordan said the location of extreme sporting activities at Clipstone was ideally placed to attract people such as mountain bikers at sherwood Pines.

He added: “There are also lots opportunities for start-ups - such as shops selling kit for on-site activities.”

Mr Morden said the plan, though still in its infancy, had seen encouragement from public body English Heritage.

A planning application has been submitted by the headstocks’ owner, Welbeck Estates, to have them demolished.

Meanwhile, Clipstone Colliery Regeneration Trust has created an e-petition to see the application refused and the historic site preserved.
