The supermarket chain’s plans were refused on the grounds that in increase in turning vehicles, especially at peak times, so close by would lead to traffic dangers.

Sainsbury’s had hoped to demolish the site’s existing car sales garage, replacing it with the store and 16 car parking spaces.

As well as concerns from Nottighamshire County Council’s highways department, residents said the site contained insufficient parking and meant a pollution increase.

They also objected on the grounds that it was not appropriate in a semi-rural village location, the existing retail was low usage retail while the proposal was high usage and Sainsbury’s already had a major store four miles away.

A council spokesperson said “The application was refused on the grounds that there would be an increase in the use of the right turn entrance into the site from Main Road and limited visibility over the brow of the hill would affect safety.”
