North Notts is the earthquake capital of the UK

Last night’s 2.6 earthquake which hit the Mansfield and Hucknall area is not actually so unusual.

In fact, North Notts is actually the earthquake capital of the UK.

There is more seismic activity here than anywhere else in the British Isles, and earlier this year there was a swarm of dozens of small quakes around New Ollerton.

Most of the smaller quakes that are recorded by the British Geological Survey are so slight that they are not felt or heard by the public.

But last night’s tremor was different.

Jo Leman, from Hucknall, said: “We have felt a massive tremor, felt like something large hitting the house. We were watching something scary on Tele too!”
