The local authority has continued to commission support to kick the habit through local GPs and pharmacies, New Leaf Stop Smoking Service and the Bassetlaw Stop Smoking Service.

Smoking remains the number one public health priority in Nottinghamshire, where 19.4 per cent of people are smokers, down from around 23 per cent in 2010.

It is responsible for around 1,300 deaths a year and is the main factor in inequalities in life expectancy.

“Stopping smoking isn’t easy, but we know that at any one time two out of every three smokers would like to kick the habit – getting started and taking that first step can be the hardest bit,” said coun Joyce Bosnjak, chairman of the Nottinghamshire Health and Wellbeing Board.

“It is achievable though, and is much more likely with the support of specialists who know how to guide you through the process.”

Smokers can access free advice, including through one-to-one support, group sessions, telephone support, and Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT).

Advice is tailored to suit the needs of the individual and those who seek assistance are four times more likely to quit.
