NOTTINGHAMSHIRE: Force supports White Ribbon Day

Between May 2012 and April 2013, 22,560 domestic abuse related crimes were recorded by Nottinghamshire Police.

Seventy six per cent of victims of Domestic Violence in Nottinghamshire are women and figures show that the Christmas period is one of the peaks in the year.

Superintendent Helen Chamberlain, Head of Public Protection, said: “National campaigns like this are more than just wearing a white ribbon, they are a way to raise the vital funds that are needed to keep refuges open for women in Nottinghamshire who are fleeing violent relationships.

“We should remember that even though White Ribbon Day is a yearly event, the force’s pursuit to reduce domestic abuse happens 365 days a year through the actions that our staff and officers carry out each day.

You can show your pledge against violence to women by purchasing a white ribbon at one of our police stations. Ribbons are available from most front-counters at police stations and cost £1 each. All of the funds raised will be donated to a Nottingham-based women’s refuge, which offers a safe environment for women and their children who may be fleeing domestic violence.

Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping said: “As a man, I am proud to support the White Ribbon Campaign and am delighted that Nottingham’s Man Enough Campaign is still active and urge the male population to join me and sign up to show their solidarity in the fight against domestic abuse.

“It is a fact that one in four women will experience domestic abuse at some point in their lives. It’s important that we not only work to make women safer but support men to take action against abuse.”
