Yvan Pennant punched each man once to the face on the ramp leading to Wilko’s car park, on Leeming Street, on October 14.

When police arrived some time later, one of the men was still unconscious with a suspected broken jaw, said prosecutor Kate Hartley.

Both men were taken to King’s Mill Hospital, where they declined treatment, and refused to pursue the matter.

But Pennant’s attack was captured on CCTV and a media campaign led to his arrest shortly afterwards.

Finbarr Hennessy, mitigating, said Pennant had been in a nightclub with two friends when he was approached by the men and an argument took place.

Bouncers threw the two men out, before returning to tell Pennant he was “equally culpable” and threw him out as well.

“CCTV does show the males following Mr Pennant and his two friends,” said Mr Hennessy.

“He is trying to get to his vehicle and he does lash out. He obviously feels under threat at the time.

“The punches were very effective. Both complainants were knocked straight to the floor. Neither wanted to pursue a complaint.”

Mr Hennessy added that Pennant’s last conviction was in 2014.

“He is realistic,” he said. “He knows the custody threshold has been passed.”

Pennant, 24, of Dryden Street, Nottingham, admitted two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, when he appeared at Mansfield Magistrates Court, on Wednesday.

He was sent to Nottingham Crown Court to be sentenced on April 25.
