Chad teamed up with Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs both hospitals, to launch a brand new Nurse of the Year award.

After floods of nominations, the hotly anticipated ceremony took place on Friday 1st November and saw around 60 nurses attend King’s Mill education centre.

Sue Bowler, executive director of nursing and quality at Sherwood Forest Hospitals, said: “We started these awards because we want to celebrate everything that is good, positive and fun about nursing.

“There has been an awful lot of bad press about hospitals at the minute, but this is a time for celebration. It is about trying to say thank you and recognising our talented staff.

“The awards have gone really well and the nurse of the year award went to a very worthy winner.”

Categories for the awards included Nurse of the Year, Children’s Nurse of the Year, Nursing Team of the Year and Midwife of the Year.

One winner for each category was selected from King’s Mill Hospital and Mansfield Community Hospital.

Suzanne Goralik was awarded Nurse of the Year for being an unsung hero. She has worked as a gynaecologist cancer nurse for 30 years.

She said: “I am overwhelmed about this award. I have worked as a cancer nurse since my student training and to receive this recognition is definitely a highlight of my career.”

Helen Evans won Midwife of the Year, Team of the Year was won by the ward leaders for General Surgery and Trauma & Orthopaedics and Deb Farn took the Children’s Nurse of the Year award.

As part of the awards staff also took part in a big bake off.

Sue Stringer won the bake off with her nurse angel cake.
