As a Hucknall Ashfield Independent councillor, we’d like to welcome the Conservatives to the ‘Hands off Hucknall’ campaign, writes Coun Lee Waters, county councillor for Hucknall South.

The Ashfield Independents have been campaigning against Labour-run Nottingham City Council wanting to swallow up Hucknall to pay their debts for years, not just because there is an election around the corner.

In Hucknall, the number one complaint we receive is about the state of the broken roads and pavements.

This has been the responsibility of the Conservatives for close to eight years, and Labour before them.

The Conservatives know they have let Hucknall down, they have let Ashfield down and they have let down Nottinghamshire.

That is why petitions like the one in Hucknall are springing up across our county. A similar one has been launched in Rushcliffe, another in Gedling, and another in Broxtowe.

The petition in Hucknall has been written by Conservative HQ, under new leader Kemi Badenoch MP, who see it a massive distraction from their failures of well over a decade.

The Tories at Nottinghamshire County Council have treated Hucknall and Linby with abandon for decades.

Take for instance their new HQ, one they may not even need – costs have spiralled out of control - £20million and counting. They are even spending £2.5million demolishing part of County Hall just weeks before they sell it.

Worse than that, this has unlocked land for close to 2,000 houses right on the Hucknall border, at a time they know our infrastructure cannot cope. The Conservatives treat Hucknall as badly as Labour are doing. They are no friends of Hucknall.

I raised the prospect of Nottingham City Council wanting to take over Hucknall in my maiden speech as a new Nottinghamshire County Councillor in May 2021

Hucknall deserves better than a merger with Nottingham City.

It also deserves better that a cut and paste campaign from Tory HQ. You can ensure that our voices are heard in the fight to keep our future in Hucknall’s hands but only if you vote for the Ashfield Independents, the only people who keep their promises to the people of Hucknall.
