LETTER: Why hold lights switch on when shops are all shut?

It was great to see so many people going into Mansfield to watch the big switch on and spend some money. My main problem with the light switch on was the day.

Having had dinner then going into town mid-afternoon I was expecting to do some shopping after the switch-on, not realising that ALL the shops closed at 5pm.

What is wrong with Mansfield organising a big event for thousands of people with cash to spend in a recession then closing all the shops. Absolutely ridiculous!!!

Is our town so wealthy that we can afford to do this? Would a Friday or Saturday switch on not be better where the shops can stay open late and trade, and families could still go and participate in all the activities.

Come on Mansfield use your common sense!

WHAT DO YOU THINK? Is there a better time and date for the lights to be turned on?
