New councillors will no longer have a life that is their own

MAY I offer my congratulations to the incoming county councillors and wish them well.

My sincere thanks and condolences go to the outgoing county councillors Chris Baron (Lab) and Dave Shaw (Lab), who have both served the Hucknall community tirelessly in their many years in office.

I really do hope the newly-elected county councillors are fully aware of the workload and the enormity of the task they have now agreed to undertake.

It is a 24/7 job and their life will no longer be their own now that they are in the public domain.

The prefix of councillor is not just for effect. They now have to live a life where the phone never stops ringing and where there is an endless round of committees to attend and meetings to go to.

They will have to deal with people who expect them to sort out every problem, from dog mess to boy racers, not to mention the commute to County Hall that is expected on a regular basis.

I cannot speak on behalf of the whole branch but my solely personal opinion is that the MPs in London should all take a long hard look at these results and hang their heads in shame at the carnage and devastation their greed has caused to good hard-working local people who have paid the price for things they have no control over – when all they have tried to do is serve their local community to the best of their ability.

Whatever your political preferences, you cannot deny the years of unstinting loyalty and dedication to their duties and to the people of Hucknall by Chris Baron and Dave Shaw. They always tried to do what they felt was best for Hucknall and their achievements will be missed by a lot of people.

HELEN SIMPSON,

Chairman,

Hucknall Branch,

Labour Party.
